They're also taller than older rollers and can better fit under beds and couches with low sides and are designed to allow this model to move more easily across different floor types.
What sets the Roomba 980 apart from other models of this class however, is its incorporation of the latest dirt detection feature that utilizes cameras to identify tiny bits of dirt. This is an improvement over the previous model that relied on a sensor-driven pseudorandom cover method to bounce around the room and clean the entire area three times at various angles.
In our tests of its performance in our tests of its performance, the Roomba 980 did well on carpets and hard flooring. It scored highly on carpets with a low pile, and on mid-pile. It did a good job getting rid of pet hair, but had a difficult time with the long and thick pet hair that was stuck together.
Despite these minor shortcomings, the Roomba 980 remains one of our best-performing robots, and isn't even far from being as costly as some of the other top-of-the-line models in this list. It has many of the features we would expect from a top model, but it doesn't have all the fancy apps or smart home integration you'd get from other top contenders.
The iRobot Roomba can be set up quickly and is available for use immediately. After taking off the yellow bin insert and battery pull tab from its undercarriage it is simply connected to a wall socket or its Home Base docking stations, click the "Clean button" and let it do its job. It will return to docking station when it runs out of battery or becomes full of sand.
